Rob Caviness
Artist Name: Righteous Cypher
Rob has been in music since childhood, producing his first beats on dual tape decks. “I remember one of the first songs I ever remixed the beat of was a Naughty By Nature song, and when I showed my friends, they were blown away at what I could on a tape deck… I think I still have that tape somewhere, but that feeling I got by seeing the faces of people when they heard something I created, stayed with me forever.”
In his early teens, Rob had no access to real instruments of lesson of any kind, but can recall playing along to Guns and Roses, Kool and the Gang, and Parliament on his grandpa’s old guitar that had no strings, “I was basically air guitaring, on a real guitar, imagining the feel of playing live. Hearing live music is it for me, when you can hear the crowd’s energy, that does more for me than even the best studio recordings”.
In the US Marines, Rob picked up an actual guitar and learned a few chords for the first time. OCD quickly took over, and he learned a great amount in very little time. “In my off time, I was either surfing or playing guitar. I started with Sublime and Alice and Chains, and learned a few albums front to back. And then my bro told me ‘if you can play Dave Matthews, you can play anything’, and so that’s what I did. I literally learned every song and every version of every DMB or Dave and Tim album that was available at the time.
When he got out of the Marines, Rob got accepted to the University of Colorado’s guitar program, and attended the Denver campus. In his senior year, he started a music school and recording studio with a business partner. A few years into that endeavor, Rob began touring and playing well over 100 shows a year. Having the opportunity to play with several well known artists from multiple genres.
Nearly a decade later, Rob left everything to raise his young family. “I realized, it just wasn’t the dad that I wanted my kids to have. Not that there aren’t guys doing it right, but for me, I just had to let some things go for a while”. It was a tough decision, but he knew that he would be back to music when the time was right. And that time is now.
Rob is signed to sync publishing companies in Europe and Australia, and the US, and is constantly improving and honing in his skills as a music producer and musician and is currently touring with Country Top 40 Artist, Jason Pritchett.
“One of my favorite things in this life is to see people come up, rise to their potential, and achieve their goals, and dreams. And when I get to be a part of that, by having a guitar part in a song, or someone spittin’ fire on a beat I made… man, it doesn’t get much better for me.”
